WELCOME                                 trio 2010

All 2010 kids have arrived! See the "2010 Breeding Schedule" page for details.

Located in the state of Virginia in the Shenandoah Valley, we are on the western edge of Augusta County and approximately eight miles outside of Staunton.

Swiss Kid Dairy Goats was established in the summer of 2005 with two very cute Aspen-Hill’s Purebred Saanen does (Thanks Barbara!). There’s been no turning back and nothin’ but Saanens around here ever since. Now entering our fifth breeding season, we are expecting a bounty of kids in 2010. Since adding larger American Saanen breeding stock out of  Kickadee Hill in West Virginia, we anticipate gorgeous new Swiss Kids with silky white coats again this year.

There's wisdom in goatkeeping.jessjesskid

It's just not necessary to keep a dairy cow in order to supply your family with milk, and homesteaders are beginning to realize it. Goats are easy to manage, fun to be around, and they'll munch away at scrub areas on your property a cow wouldn't even consider eating. Goats need very little space. An average size dairy goat will provide roughly a gallon of milk each day over a ten month period each year--plenty of milk for a small household.

Goats were one of the first domestic animals, and have been used by humans for their meat, milk and hair since around 6000BC. Globally, there are many more people who drink goats' milk than cows' milk. The notion that goats' milk tastes "goaty" is just not true. Goats' milk can be made to taste "goaty" if  your goats are fed the wrong things at the wrong time--for example alfalfa fed to goats before milking can result in an off flavor in their milk. Goats' milk is arguably better for you than cows' milk. A Swiss Breed

Saanens have a calm nature and are equally suited to both small holdings with just a few goats and larger commercial milking herds. Saanens are a sturdy breed, quieter than other breeds, friendly, curious and affectionate. An attractive dairy type, they are generally all white or cream colored with erect ears and legs straight and strong. Named for the Saanen Valley in Switzerland where they originated, they are the largest of the dairy breeds. They have slender heads with a dished or straight facial line.
